Congratulations to Dr. Bethany Douglas, fellow board members Drs. Grady Johnson, Patrick Weaver, and Samira Meymand, and Executive Director Mrs. Virginia Smith, on the completion of another terrific year for the JDS! The final event of the year, Spouse Night, was held on May 16, 2019, at the beautiful Epping Forest Country Club. Under Dr. Douglas’ outstanding leadership, the 2018-19 year included a half-day license renewal seminar, four dinner meetings with excellent speakers, our annual Give Kids A Smile program, three social events, and the establishment of the JDS Foundation, Inc., a 301(c)(3) entity to aid in fund-raising for Give Kids A Smile and other community programs. Special thanks to our Treasurer, Dr. Johnson, for all his hard work in establishing the Foundation!
Give Kids A Smile was again held in partnership with Florida State College at Jacksonville and was highly successful, with 230 children receiving free dental care and home care supplies. Thank you to all our volunteers, to our generous corporate partners and NEDDA, and to Drs. Jeff Smith and Monica Franklin of FSCJ. We’re thrilled that our 2020 GKAS event will be chaired by an actual pediatric dentist, Vice-President Dr. Patrick Weaver, and we have our first board meeting with Dr. Smith scheduled in July.
Welcome to our new board members, Treasurer Dr. Chris Henry and Secretary Dr. Noel Rodriguez! We are grateful for their time, participation, and insight, and look forward to a wonderful year of service to our members and the community. The 2019-20 term will kick off on Thursday, August 22, with a social get-together at Moxie’s in the Town Center. On Friday, September 27, our license renewal seminar will begin with Dr. Michael Ragan speaking on risk management. Dr. Ragan received rave reviews from attendees for his presentation here in 2018, and he’ll be back with additional content. For our speaker on domestic violence, we’re delighted to have Dr. Nicholas Grimaudo of the University of Florida. Please mark your calendars now to attend this important program.
Our dinner meetings will be held at Maggiano’s and will begin on October 24, with Dr. Deeba Kashtwari of UF speaking on “Images by the Slice.” For Military Night on November 14, members Dr. Rick Aguila and Dr. Matthew Nawrocki will give a joint presentation on “Surgical and Restorative Concepts in Implant-Supported Fixed Hybrids.” On January 16, 2020, Dr. Luiz Gonzaga will speak on “Biologic Complications in Implant Dentistry;” and on March 26, Dr. Gregory Oxford will present “Oral Implications in Older Adults.” Of course, 2020 will also include two community events, Give Kids A Smile in February and NEDDA’s Mission of Mercy in April. Between our exemplary speakers and Jacksonville’s dental community programs, we’re anticipating a phenomenal year for the Jacksonville Dental Society. We hope you'll join us for all these events!
